Workcover Counselling

Workcover Psychologists Brisbane

If you have been injured or are in distress as a direct result of your working conditions, you may be entitled to Workcover support, in the form of a psychology or mental health referral. Workplace injuries are not limited to a physical injury – if you are put in danger or psychological harm at work, you are entitled to mental health support.

When referred to a psychologist or counsellor through Workcover, you will be able to visit and talk to a qualified psychologist about your concerns, experiences, and mental health.

What is Workcover Counselling?

Workcover Queensland is the Queensland Government funded program that serves as worker’s compensation for employees that have been injured on the job. Workcover for psychological counselling is designed to support your recovery from an injury or illness, with the right mental health support.

The Centre for Human Potential offers Workcover psychology and counselling in Brisbane to individuals who may have experienced an injury, illness, or trauma at work. The counselling services will offer confidential, private, and empathetic support, in a judgement-free space. We have a team of psychologists who have experience in this area – we are committed to helping you get through this injury, illness, or traumatic experience.

How to Get Started with a Workcover Psychologist

If you are eligible for Workcover counselling in Brisbane, you will have received a referral through Workcover QLD. If you are in the process of submitting a claim, we encourage you to get in touch with our team and we can walk you through the next steps once you have received your referral. Generally, the process will be:

1. Get in touch with our team directly – we are registered with Workcover QLD and can get the process started from our end. Alternatively, you can speak to your GP about your mental injury and request a certificate.
2. Inform your employer that you have sustained a workplace injury and that you have submitted a claim/gotten a referral.

3. If you have not already, make sure that you have lodged your claim, along with any evidence, over to Workcover Queensland.

4. Together we will schedule your initial assessment with a psychologist or counsellor to determine things like symptoms, areas of concern, and treatment requirements.

5. Your psychologist will then work with you to develop a customised treatment plan.

6. You will then need to attend your therapy sessions as recommended by your clinician.

Eligibility for Workcover Counselling

Anyone who is a full time, part time, casual, or a subcontractor is eligible to make a claim for Workcover counselling sessions. The injury may be physical or mental; and having a pre-existing condition does not rule you out either – it is very possible to be eligible if your condition has worsened as a result of your employment-related injury.

However, it is important to note that work-related stress alone generally would not be sufficient to get your claim approved for a workplace injury. The sorts of mental health conditions that do make someone eligible for workcover counselling include

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Bipolar affective disorder
  • Adjustment disorder
  • Dissociative disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Psychosis

If you are still in the process of getting your claim reviewed and approved, you can still access early psychology and counselling treatment. For workers with a mental injury, you can get access to psychological treatment funded by Workcover, even while they are still assessing the claim.

To access early support, you will need to have lodged a claim, and have a work capacity certificate from your GP.
