EMDR Therapy Brisbane

The impact of a traumatic event can often linger in the minds of individuals who have witnessed or experienced it, causing considerable distress and disrupting normal life. For these individuals, speaking about the trauma or processing it is often difficult, hindering the process of recovery. In such cases, EMDR therapy is a possible form of psychological treatment that can help individuals recover from the negative effects of traumatic experiences or events.

At CFHP, our EMDR therapists are experienced in helping trauma-affected individuals process fears and negative experiences in a healthy and natural way, facilitating recovery and enabling a higher quality of life.

What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a form of psychotherapy that involves the use of repeated eye movements and bilateral stimulation to help the brain process negative events and reduce its impact on mental health. It is an evidence-based treatment that is gaining popularity in adoption by mental health professionals due to its proven effectiveness in treating trauma-related conditions such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression.

What can EMDR therapy help with?

Our EMDR therapists in Brisbane make use of this treatment strategy to primarily treat PTSD, but EMDR can also support recovery in other trauma-related conditions including:

  • Depression
  • Substance abuse and addiction
  • Panic disorder and chronic anxiety
  • Eating disorders

The EMDR therapists at CFHP are focused on creating a caring and comfortable environment for affected individuals to get the support they need to move past their negative experiences and enjoy a higher quality of life.

If you are struggling with any trauma-related issues, EMDR treatment offers a viable and proven strategy to help recover from the debilitating effects affecting your life.  Contact our friendly team today to begin your journey toward better mental health with EMDR therapy.

How does EMDR psychology work?

In EMDR therapy, therapists do not typically require clients to talk much about the traumatic event, like in a counselling session. Instead, EMDR therapists will ask clients to focus on the negative event that is the source of their trauma throughout the session.

Therapists will then proceed to guide the client through a series of side-to-side eye movements while using repetitive sounds or tapping as a form of bilateral stimulation. As this happens, clients will be asked to voice out any changes in their thoughts and feelings toward the traumatic event.

Clients may experience gradual changes in their beliefs and perceptions of the event over time, as the brain processes the event with the support of the therapy. If clients feel uncomfortable at any point during the treatment, they can communicate with the therapist to stop the session.

A typical session will last from 50-60 minutes or longer, depending on the treatment plan created by the therapist.
